Badlands!

In photography, wander

I’m feeling a wee bit jealous because some friends are spending the week in Grand Staircase Escalante hiking the canyons. I do like me some sandstone! Oh, but wait a minute, I live in New Mexico and we have sandstone here, too. Fortunately, from Albuquerque, you can be in the middle of some sandstone badland hoodoo awesomeness in under an hour, and so we went. Believe it or not, it’s been a couple of years since we’ve spent a day at Ojito Wilderness. I’m not sure why we haven’t been recently, but we had a fun day reacquainting ourselves with all the cool rocks. We parked at the “hoodoo trailhead” and walked part of the trail along the base of the Bernalillo Mesa, then struck out, cross country, to work our way down one of the smaller unnamed washes to the Arroyo Bernalillo. We followed the arroyo downstream a bit until we hit the confluence with Arroyo La Jara and then headed upstream. We ended up climbing out of the arroyo for a bit, to avoid the sucking muck, but we pretty much followed the arroyo back to the road. From there it was under a mile to get to the parked car. For windy season, the weather was quite nice, although the skies were not totally clear and I still haven’t seen a dinosaur.
