TBT: Gila National Forest

In photography, wander

Yes, there’s been a flurry of activity here this week – I must be feeling the end of the year looming large as I’ve set other things aside to do some site housekeeping.

From the unpublished archives: Here’s a slim photo gallery from a Memorial Day long weekend backpacking trip in the Gila National Forest, just south of the Aldo Leopold Wilderness area. The excursion is not well documented as parts of the trip ended up being rather testy and sapped our energy for dawdling with cameras. The planned route started at the Railroad Canyon trailhead, ascended to the Black Range Crest Trail via Gallinas Canyon, followed the crest to Hillsboro Peak and closed the loop via East Railroad Canyon. Due to the large burn scar, and subsequent flash flood damage, parts of the trip required lots of scrambling, bushwacking and route finding – including  most of the knee destroying descent through East Railroad Canyon.
